A Zell-Led Firm’s Fight With Small Tenants

Billionaire Sam Zell has said a number of times that his interest in acquiring Tribune Co. is purely economic -- not egotism, not passion for the company-owned Chicago Cubs, not a soft spot for newspapers. The 65-year-old Chicagoan has nicknamed himself the Grave Dancer because of his ability to see profit opportunities where others see miles of bad road. Zells dogged pursuit of Tribune has left many people wondering how this dealer in distressed properties would run one of the nations largest media companies, whose holdings include the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and cable channel WGN. But dont look for sympathy from the paintball fanatic who Forbes says is worth $4.5 billion, say people who have had dealings with a lesser-known enterprise led by Zell. They say that since becoming the largest mobile-home landlord, the company has battled cities across the country, enlisting teams of lawyers to challenge local rent-control laws and raise rents.

Growing Demand for Eco-Friendly Construction

With rising energy prices and a growing demand for eco-friendly construction, more and more people are coming around to round homes.

When Yosh Schulman and his wife, Nili Simhai, decided to find an environmentally friendly option for their new home in Millerton, N.Y., they chose a prefabricated circular home for some of those specific reasons.

"My wife runs an environmental education center, so we wanted a home that made wise use of natural resources," says Schulman. "Circular home use fewer building materials. Their footprint's impact on the environment is minimal. There are heating and cooling benefits, as well."

Energy efficiency is important for the couple's area of eastern New York State, where residents experience lots of snow and cold winter temperatures.

Preparing for nature's fury: Will your haven suffice when next ...

ORLANDO, Fla. - Sammy Hart built an ultrasecure closet in his home to save his most valuable possessions. It turns out his foresight probably saved his life.

He woke up during an early-morning rainstorm on Feb. 2. Television news was reporting dangerous weather approaching his rural Crow's Nest neighborhood in northeast Lake County, Fla.

Hart, a Lake County Sheriff's sergeant, grabbed his 19-year-old daughter and his dog as the power went out. They scrambled to the walk-in closet that Hart had constructed as a safe room with steel-reinforced concrete walls.

Around them, windows shattered and parts of the house fell apart. Gusts peeled the roof back and scattered pieces of the interior through the neighborhood. Then - within a minute - it was over.
