Product review: IQAir HealthPro air purifier is a robust, high-end ...

It's bad enough that we have to suffer with many different sorts of pollution outdoors in our everyday life, but when this sort of contamination invades our homes, what we're often breathing can hardly be called fresh air any longer. Even though it may feel nice to stand in front of an air conditioner on a hot day, the indoor air you're breathing is probably not as refreshing as you might think. It's actually filled with indoor pollutants that may include radon, pet dander, dust mite allergens, tobacco smoke, mold spores and other particles. According to recent findings, indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air.

So how do you get rid of these microbial nightmares and improve the quality of the air you breathe? The solution is simple: air purification technology.

For this NewsTarget review, I decided to take a look at high-end air purifiers currently on the market and the winner was above and beyond the HealthPro series by IQAir (www.iqair.com).

Residents survey tornado's damage

The tornado warning had just flashed on Anne Avin's TV Sunday morning when she heard a "really loud" noise and felt her mobile home begin to shake.

She instantly knew what was happening.

"I grabbed (my 9-year-old grandson) and hit the floor and put blankets and pillows on top of us," Avin, 49, said as she ate a chicken dinner with her family Monday at a Red Cross service center.

Avin gathered with other storm victims at the Red Cross center, set up at Enon Missionary Baptist Church south of Sumter.

The tornado knocked her singlewide mobile home off its block foundation and tore off part of its roof. Avin said she felt fortunate to escape unharmed with her grandson.

The tornado, which reached speeds of up to 140 mph, cut a deadly, 14-mile path across Sumter County that was 300 yards wide, local and state authorities said Monday.

Spring nor'easter brings heavy rain and powerful gusts to East

UNDATED (AP) - The governors of West Virginia and New Jersey have declared states of emergency because of a powerful nor'easter packing high winds and heavy rains.

The declaration gives the states extra powers to handle storm-related problems. The governors urged residents to stay home from work and off the roads, if possible.

The storm is giving runners in today's Boston Marathon something to worry about as the forecast is calling for up to five inches of rain.

Cars are struck on various roadways. People fled their homes for shelters. And New York's governor deployed more than three-thousand members of the National Guard to areas that might be affected by the storm.

New York City saw record rainfall yesterday with five and a-half inches.

Universal Forest Products 1Q Earnings Down 75 Percent, But March ...

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Universal Forest Products, Inc. reported first quarter earnings of $3.9 million on sales of $665 million, down 75 percent from its first quarter 2006 profit ot $15.9 million. The company said last year's figures were unusually high due to the spike in FEMA orders for manufactured homes in the wake of the 2005 hurricane season.

"We predicted that the housing market would be soft, but it turned out to be even weaker than we anticipated. In addition, supply continues to exceed demand in an already depressed lumber market, keeping prices low and adversely affecting our sales numbers," said President and CEO Michael B. Glenn. "These factors combined to create a tough quarter."

Glenn noted that January and February were as weak as the Company has seen, but as the weather improved in March, sales and profits also rebounded.
